PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 16, 2024) — Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) has attained a rating of 4.5 out of 5 from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), placing it among the top 3% of Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans in the country.

Only 9 out of 321 PPO plans joined BCBSRI in attaining a 4.5 score in NCQA’s commercial Health Plan Ratings for 2024, and just one health plan in the entire nation scored higher.

NCQA, a private nonprofit organization dedicated to improving healthcare quality, evaluates health plans on the quality of care that patients receive, how happy patients are with their care and health plans’ efforts to keep improving.

“We take great pride in consistently joining a small but select group of plans across the country to attain such a high rating. Our exemplary score reflects our collaborative relationship with providers, who help ensure that our members are getting the right care, at the right time and in the right place,” said Dr. Farah Shafi, M.D., chief medical officer for BCBSRI. “We are committed to providing high-quality, affordable, and equitable healthcare to our members, and this rating tells us we are continuing to deliver on that commitment.”

BCBSRI’s rating signals that the service and clinical quality of BCBSRI’s commercial PPO has met NCQA’s highest standards for consumer protection and quality improvement.

Earlier this year, NCQA awarded BCBSRI Health Equity Accreditation for its commercial health plans, recognizing the insurer’s efforts to reduce health disparities and promote health equity for its members and the communities it serves. BCBSRI is the only Rhode Island health insurer to achieve NCQA Health Equity Accreditation for commercial health plans.
