Amo Visits Community Health Centers to Uplift Vital Work in the Fight for Affordability During National Community Health Center Week
Trump’s Big, Ugly Law jeopardized Medicaid for more than 30,000 Rhode Islanders, many of whom receive care at community health centers
Providence, RI – This National Health Center Week, Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI) visited two Community Health Centers in the First Congressional District.
On Tuesday, Congressman Amo visited Providence Community Health Center’s Prairie Avenue location to highlight barriers Rhode Islanders face to finding a family doctor. Doctors and patients shared how the $1 trillion Trump cut from our nation’s health care system in the Big, Ugly Law has driven up costs and wait times.
On Thursday, Amo joined the Rhode Islanders seeking resources at the Blackstone Valley Community Health Center Fair. As many Rhode Islanders struggle to make ends meet due to rising costs, the fair provided information about available programs to help working families defray mounting costs. Then, Amo attended the Rhode Island Health Center Association Beacon Awards to honor the exemplary employees of our state’s community health centers.
“Community health centers provide Rhode Islanders with affordable, comprehensive primary health care,” said Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI). “But at a time when our state already faces a shortage of primary care doctors, Trump has put a target on the back of those providing this essential care and the families that rely on it. Slashing Medicaid and failing to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits has put dedicated doctors, nurses, and other providers who keep our community health centers running under great strain and jeopardized the health and well-being of thousands of Rhode Islanders. I’m fighting in Congress to reverse these devastating cuts, lower health care costs, and ensure our community health centers have the resources they need to continue delivering quality primary care.”
Background
A champion for health care, Congressman Amo has fought Trump’s cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act.
He fought to redirect the $75 billion Trump directed toward a slush fund for ICE toward health care; Republicans shot it down.
He pushed to ensure the federal budget reflected the importance of Medicaid.
He called on the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services to scrap Trump’s onerous work requirements that would force sick and disabled Americans unable to work to go without care.
