City Finance Director Thomas Zidelis Resigns
Cranston, RI — Mayor Kenneth J. Hopkins announced today that Finance Director Thomas Zidelis has submitted his resignation effective end of day Friday, March 6, 2026.
Mr. Zidelis came to Cranston in October 2022 following a distinguished career serving in many capacities, including Chief Financial Officer with the City of Worcester, Massachusetts. Mayor Hopkins expressed appreciation for his commitment and willingness to serve when Cranston needed experienced leadership.
“Tom came out of retirement to help guide the City’s finances, and I am grateful for his dedication,” Mayor Hopkins said. “Public service often calls on individuals more than once, and Tom answered that call with professionalism, integrity, and an admirable work ethic.”
During Zidelis’s tenure, the Finance Department completed the City’s most recent municipal audit and related fiscal review. As the City continues evaluating those findings and strengthening financial planning, reporting, and oversight processes, Mayor Hopkins noted that this moment presents an appropriate opportunity for a leadership transition.
To ensure continuity, Controller Michael Igoe will serve as Interim Finance Director while the City conducts a search for a permanent successor. The Mayor’s selected candidate will be presented to the City Council for advice and consent.
Mayor Hopkins emphasized that the City remains focused on strengthening its financial systems and continuing progress on behalf of Cranston residents.
“Our priorities are clear, and I appreciate the continued partnership of the City Council as we work together to move Cranston forward,” he said.
