City of Pawtucket Hosts Groundbreaking Ceremony for Synthetic Turf Field at Slater Middle School
PAWTUCKET – Slater Middle School in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, reached a significant milestone Thursday with the official groundbreaking ceremony for its new synthetic turf field, enhancing greenspace for students and residents alike. The event was attended by community leaders, including Mayor Donald Grebien, Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos, Councilor Marlena Martins Stachiowiak, School Committee Member Joanne Bonollo, Superintendent Patricia Royal, Senator Sandra Cano, Senator Jonathon Acosta, Representative Cherie Cruz, and other city officials and community members.
The groundbreaking ceremony symbolizes a collaborative effort to provide state-of-the-art facilities that promote physical activity, friendship, and community engagement. The new synthetic turf field at Slater Middle School will not only support the school’s athletic programs but will also serve as a welcoming space for various community activities and events.

The groundbreaking ceremony featured ceremonial shoveling of dirt, symbolizing the start of construction that will transform the current landscape into a vibrant hub of activity. Councilor Marlena Martins Stachiowiak expressed her enthusiasm for the project’s potential impact on student life. “This is a long overdue upgrade for the students and the community, a field where students can enjoy their time, thrive, and create memories,” noted Councilor Martins Stachiowiak.
