Partial Lane Closures Expected on Allens Avenue from January 29 to February 7

Providence, RI — Mayor Brett P. Smiley and the Department of Public Works (DPW) today announced the continuation of critical repairs to the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier, set to begin on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. The project will focus on the street gates located on Allens Avenue and at the Manchester Street Power Station, ensuring the barrier’s ongoing functionality and storm resilience.

“Since taking office, I have made climate resiliency a core component of Providence’s ongoing infrastructure plans. Repairing and upgrading these street gates is a crucial step in our continued strategy to protect our neighbors from extreme weather,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “By investing in this important work, we are taking the necessary proactive steps to build a more resilient city and better protect our neighborhoods flooding and future storms.”

Motorists should expect partial lane closures on Allens Avenue from January 29 through February 7 as part of the gate removal process. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in both directions (northbound and southbound) in the area surrounding the gates during this time. Drivers are encouraged to plan for potential delays and use alternate routes if possible.

The work will include off-site work for both gates, which will undergo sandblasting, epoxy coating and various structural upgrades. For the Allens Avenue gate, on-site work will include drain cleaning, concrete joint sealing, concrete repairs and rubber seal replacement. At the Manchester Street Power Station, on-site work will involve closure hook replacement and other structural enhancements.

Work at the Manchester Street Power Station will not impact traffic, as the gate removal will take place within the power station’s property. This part of the work will begin the week of February 3rd.

Both gates are expected to be reinstated and fully operational by May.
