City of Providence Announces Temporary Road Closures for Roger Williams Park Boardwalk Construction
Detours will be in effect beginning December 1, 2025, for approximately 4-6 weeks
PROVIDENCE, RI — Mayor Brett P. Smiley and the Providence Parks Department today announced temporary road closures within Roger Williams Park to support construction of a new timber boardwalk at Cunliff Lake, which will improve public access and enhance recreational opportunities. Construction began the week of November 17, 2025, and road closures will start December 1, 2025.
The project includes a 300-foot timber boardwalk with a fishing overlook, an upgraded accessible boat ramp and a kayak launch. These improvements will also enhance visitor safety by better separating pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. The project strengthens stormwater management through added native plantings and protected shoreline habitat, reflecting the City’s ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing outdoor recreation at Roger Williams Park.
As part of the construction schedule, Maple and Pine avenues at Cladastris Avenue will be temporary closed beginning December 1, 2025, for approximately 4-6 weeks. These closures will limit vehicle access to Park Avenue via FC Greene Memorial Boulevard. During this period, traffic will be detoured to park entrance and exit locations at Broad Street and Montgomery Avenue and Elmwood Avenue.
Drivers using the Elmwood Avenue exit will follow Cladastris Avenue to FC Greene Memorial Boulevard to Linden Avenue to Elmwood Avenue south to Park Avenue east. Those using the Broad Street and Montgomery Avenue exit will follow Cladastris Avenue to Montgomery Avenue to Broad Street south to Warwick Avenue south to Park Avenue west.
Pedestrian and bicycle access will remain open. However, visitors are advised to follow posted signage and respect all barriers, as a crane will be active weekdays from 7AM to 3PM.
