Mayor Smiley Announces Applications for Mayoral Fellows
Competitive program offers valuable learning opportunities for recent graduates and enrolled students to get involved in the community
PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Brett P. Smiley announced today the City is accepting applications for the 2024 Mayoral Fellowship Program. The competitive program offers an exciting and creative way for undergraduate students and recent graduates to earn first-hand experience in the executive branch of city government. Mayoral fellows are placed in a city department based on their background, stated interests and suitability for a given office. They will work on high-impact projects designed to improve the quality of life for Providence residents.
“The Mayoral Fellowship program is a unique and transformative opportunity for college students interested in pursuing a career in local government,” said Mayor Brett Smiley. “Our fellows receive invaluable hands-on experience working in departments across the city on projects and initiatives that make a real difference in our community. We’re proud that many past fellows have continued their journey with us, contributing to impactful City projects.”
Mayoral Fellows will learn valuable skills and gain real-world experience in a fast-paced public service environment to prepare them for their careers. Former fellows have worked in a variety of departments including Healthy Communities, Planning and Development, Sustainability and in the Mayor’s Office, each offering a unique experience.
“During my summer as a Mayoral Fellow, I had the privilege of contributing to various ongoing projects within the City while gaining invaluable insights into municipal governance,” said George Malian, now serving as the Special Assistant to the Mayor’s Office, who previously served as a Mayoral Fellow in the Mayor’s Center for City Services in 2023. “I highly recommend this program for any student aspiring for a career in government to apply for the Providence Mayoral Fellowship. This is a great opportunity to gain firsthand experience while making a tangible impact on your community.”
The 10-week program offers participants a $3,000 stipend as they work under the direct supervision of a Department Director. The program also accommodates students interested in participating for academic credit.
The 2024 Fellowship will begin on Thursday, June 6 and end on August 16, 2024. Applications are due by May 10, 2024 and may be submitted online at: https://jobs.providenceri.gov/
