Rhode Island’s Congressional Delegation Demands Accountability from DHS

Statement from U.S. Senator Jack Reed
“I’m voting no on the motion to proceed to the appropriations package. ICE/DHS should not move forward without accountability, investigations, and reforms.
“If Republicans want to defend the ICE killings in Minneapolis & shut down key federal agencies, that’s their choice. But Senate Democrats can & will stand up for justice, accountability, & real reform and safeguards to prevent continued ICE abuse & unjust lethal force.
“Republicans have a choice: Listen to Americans & swiftly fund every federal agency except ICE so we can ensure real change – OR – Republicans can keep blindly following Trump’s chaos & jeopardize healthcare, defense, transportation, & education funding.”

Statement from U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse
“The Trump admin has empowered masked goons who terrorize American citizens, undermine local law enforcement, and lie to the American people about constitutional violations.
‘“Everyone knows the DHS funding bill needs work, and I will not vote for it as it’s currently written.
“Senate Republicans should separate the DHS bill, like the House did, so we can pass all other appropriations and fund the government.”

Statement from Congressman Seth Magaziner
“Federal immigration agents have killed two United States citizens, imprisoned children, conducted arrests without warrants, and are violating the civil rights of Americans daily. Last week, I voted in the House against giving the Department of Homeland security more funding and I am urging the Senate to do the same until major reforms are made. We need a complete overhaul before more people are needlessly killed.”

Statement from Congressman Gabe Amo
“I voted no on funding Trump’s Department of Homeland Security and ICE’s out-of-control, unchecked power. Trump and Secretary Noem are leading our nation into a moral abyss.
“Even worse, Trump cut $1 trillion from Americans’ health care, while funneling $75 billion from his Big, Ugly Law into a slush fund for the ICE force terrorizing our communities.
“As a result, ICE’s masked agents grossly disrespect due process, while immigrants and citizens alike are subject to warrantless search and detention, forced to prove their citizenship to move freely, and targeted with violence if they don’t comply or exercise their First Amendment rights.
“We must put real limits on Trump, remove Kristi Noem, and stop this regime from further trampling the rights of everyone living in our nation.”
