RIDE Publishes EnrollRI Toolkit to Support Districts, States Seeking to Innovate and Expand Learning Opportunities

Toolkit provides practical insights and replicable strategies that can be adapted nationwide, helping agencies increase accessibility, streamline application systems, and boost student engagement

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — As the 2024-2025 school year gets underway, Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green and the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) are supporting local and state education agencies seeking to innovate and improve their enrollment processes through a newly-published toolkit entitled EnrollRI: How a Small State Generated Big Learning Opportunities. The publication details how RIDE leveraged a federal Rethink grant to build a one-of-a-kind statewide enrollment platform. EnrollRI.org provides access to a statewide course catalog for RIDE’s All Course Network (ACN), a first-of-its-kind common application tool for public charters, and listings of secondary career and technical education (CTE) and adult education programs for learners of all ages and backgrounds.

“Rhode Island aims to lead the way in educational innovation as we continue to address the challenges brought by the pandemic. EnrollRI is a testament to that commitment,” said Governor Dan McKee. “Through this platform, we’re not only enhancing student engagement but also setting a new standard for how states can leverage technology and innovation to improve educational outcomes for all.”

“When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we recognized that the success of Rhode Island’s students hinged on quickly re-engaging them in their education. While we were one of the first states to return to in-person learning, RIDE sought to create a more adaptable system to keep students learning, no matter the circumstances. Developing a centralized platform like EnrollRI has truly been a game-changer for our state,” said Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green. “This toolkit not only shares the technical and strategic elements of the platform but also highlights the collective effort and vision that made it possible. We are proud of what we’ve accomplished and excited to share our learnings with others.”

In 2020, RIDE became one of just 11 states to apply for and receive a competitive Rethink K-12 Education Models Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The $10 million award has supported, enhanced, and accelerated learning in the wake of the pandemic, with three particular areas of focus: EnrollRI, high-quality instructional materials and academic interventions, and comprehensive school counseling. “The Rethink grant provided Rhode Island the opportunity to give students in every community access to academic and enrichment activities throughout the pandemic,” said RIDE State Strategy and Student Opportunity Officer Steve Osborn. “The creation of a statewide enrollment platform connected students and families from all communities to high-quality learning experiences crucial to their academic and emotional development.”
