PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Save Democracy PAC, a political action committee dedicated to confronting and defeating Republican extremism by electing strong democratic leaders who will protect our right to vote, ensure the security of our elections and reform our broken campaign finance system, today endorsed Lt. Governor Sabina Matos for Congress in the special election for Rhode Island’s 1st District.

“Save Democracy PAC is thrilled to support Lt. Governor Sabina Matos for Congress. Throughout her career, Sabina has been a champion for strengthening our democracy and protecting access to the ballot box. Voters can trust in Sabina Matos to continue standing up for the right to vote and our democracy when she’s in Congress. With all that’s at stake in Washington, we need people with Sabina’s life experience and record of leadership leading in these fights for the future of our country,” said Ben Waldon of Save Democracy PAC Board.

In her first campaign ad, Matos highlighted threats to democracy as a key motivator for her running for Congress.

“I immigrated to the United States as a young woman in pursuit of the American Dream which is only possible if our democracy is strong. I couldn’t believe what I saw on January 6th as rioters attacked our nation’s capital – it’s critical that we have leaders in Congress who will stand up against these assaults on our freedoms,” said Lt. Governor Sabina Matos, candidate for Congress. “We must work to strengthen our democracy, not tear it down. That’s why I strongly supported the Let RI Vote Act here in Rhode Island. In Congress, I’ll work to expand access to the ballot box and ensure we protect everyone’s right to vote.”

In June, Matos’ campaign released a memo detailing the findings of a new poll that shows Lt. Governor Matos with a commanding, double-digit lead in the special primary election. Matos leads the crowded field with 22% of the vote, besting nearest competitor Aaron Regunburg who polls second with 9% support. Last month, former RI-01 candidate Nick Autiello’s campaign also released the findings of a poll that shows Matos leading Regunberg 20-12 on the initial ballot and 22-13 on the final ballot, after hearing messages from the candidates.

Sabina Matos continues to have strong momentum in the special election for Rhode Island’s First District. Matos has earned key support from organized labor – the Laborers, the Building and Construction Trades Council, Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 51, Iron Workers Local 37, Painters District Council 11, Bricklayers Local 3, and Transportation Workers Union Local 2054. She has also earned endorsements from key groups, including EMILYs List, Elect Democratic Women, Congressional Hispanic Caucus BOLD PAC, Latino Victory Fund, New Dem Action Fund, Defend the Vote, PODER PAC, Vote Mama PAC, and Her Bold Move – as well as dozens of local leaders, including Myrth York and former Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts.
