WARWICK, R.I. — The Office of the State Fire Marshal is issuing a public safety warning about a dangerous new social media trend known as the “Chromebook Challenge.”

The challenge involves tampering with Chromebooks—laptop devices containing lithium-ion batteries—by inserting metal objects or wires into their charging or USB ports which cause the battery to short-circuit, overheat, and emit smoke. In some cases, this leads to thermal runaway, an uncontrollable overheating process that can release toxic gases and projectiles, potentially igniting nearby materials and causing fires and/or injuries.

A recent incident at a school in Cranston involved students attempting the challenge. While no serious injuries occurred in this instance, those who engage in this type of behavior could potentially face criminal charges, including first-degree and fourth-degree arson.

“The ‘Chromebook Challenge’ is not a harmless prank, it is a dangerous act that puts public safety at risk,” said State Fire Marshal Timothy P. McLaughlin. “Parents, teachers, and school officials should make students aware of the dangers and consequences associated with trends like this.”
