Dear neighbor,

Today, as we observe Juneteenth, we join communities across our nation in commemorating a pivotal moment in American history.

Juneteenth is both a celebration and a reflection. It reminds us of the enduring pursuit of freedom, equality, and opportunity, while encouraging us to recognize the contributions, resilience, and achievements of Black Americans throughout our history and in our communities today.

In recognition of this important occasion, I was proud to sign a City proclamation honoring the resilience and contributions of African Americans, celebrating Pawtucket’s diversity, and reaffirming our commitment to inclusion, opportunity, and unity. The proclamation encourages all residents to reflect, learn, and participate in activities that honor the significance of Juneteenth and the ongoing pursuit of freedom for all.

Pawtucket has always been strengthened by its diversity and the many cultures, backgrounds, and experiences that make our city vibrant and welcoming. As we continue our Summer of Celebration and look ahead to our nation’s 250th anniversary, Juneteenth provides an important opportunity to reflect on our shared history and recommit ourselves to building a future where everyone has the chance to succeed.

On behalf of the City of Pawtucket, I wish you and your families a meaningful and reflective Juneteenth and a happy and safe summer.

Warm regards,

Mayor Donald R. Grebien

City of Pawtucket
