 Providence Police Charge Suspect with Murder Following Investigation

Providence, RI – The Providence Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection with the death of 86-year-old John Conley.
On June 25, 2026, members of the Providence Fire Department responded to the area of Thayer Street and Angell Street for a report of a man down. Upon arrival, first responders located Mr. Conley, who was complaining of neck pain. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for evaluation and treatment.
On June 30, 2026, Providence detectives responded to Rhode Island Hospital after Conley informed hospital staff that he had been the victim of an assault that resulted in his injuries.
On July 1, 2026, detectives were notified that Conley had succumbed to his injuries. The Rhode Island Office of the State Medical Examiners subsequently determined the manner of death to be homicide.
As a result of the investigation, detectives identified 25-year-old Dylan Sutphin as the individual responsible for the assault. Based on the findings of the investigation and the determination of the medical examiners, detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Sutphin with Murder.

On July 2, 2026, Providence Police patrol officers located Sutphin in the downtown area and took him into custody without incident.
Sutphin is expected to be arraigned in Providence District Court this morning.
