Last week, the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence (RICAGV) endorsed Councilwoman LaFortune’s campaign to be the next Mayor of Providence.

Her leadership in her community as a member of City Council, as a mother, and as a Providence resident passionate about safe and healthy communities are just some of the reasons she was able to earn the trust of this incredible organization.

Over 17 years ago, Nirva lost her partner to gun violence. Since then, she has made it part of her life’s work to prevent violence before it happens and help communities heal after tragedy strikes. This endorsement means so much to the Councilwoman personally, and she will honor their trust by always fighting for safer communities.

The work that RICAGV has done and will continue to do is life-saving for the people of Providence and all those in the state of Rhode Island. Their efforts have been instrumental in passing the gun violence prevention legislation that was recently signed into law by the Governor. They have played a pivotal role in holding elected leaders accountable.

As Mayor, the Councilwoman pledges to work alongside RICAGV to build trust amongst communities to save lives, work to get firearms off our streets, and fight for investments in our community to prevent violence before it happens.

“I have stood alongside, testified alongside, and worked alongside the incredible people at the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence. I am beyond honored to have earned their support and trust. Together, we will build communities where all families and young people can thrive.”

-Councilwoman Nirva LaFortune
