One of my most important responsibilities as Secretary of State is to safeguard the data privacy of Rhode Islanders, who entrust us with their personal information when they register to vote. As many of you have seen in the news, the United States Department of Justice has spent the last several months attempting to force my office to share your private information with the Trump Administration. The DOJ’s latest step was to sue me for Rhode Island’s voter list, including your drivers’ licenses and Social Security numbers. I will continue to fight against this invasion of your privacy.

During his campaigns and in his time as President, Donald Trump has been unrelenting in his attempts to undermine our democracy. This lawsuit is from that playbook – it attempts to challenge the Constitutional mandate that states choose the “Time, Places and Manner of holding Elections” (Article I, Section 4). And it sows the seeds of distrust between voters and the very election processes that maintain and further our democracy.

Rhode Islanders can be sure that our election processes and voter list maintenance activities adhere to federal and State election laws. I will continue to fight to ensure that our elections are secure, fair, and accessible.
