Senate Courts Subcommittee Chairman: Dobbs case “aims a torpedo at the core of Roe, Casey, and nearly fifty years of precedent”

Washington, DC – Today, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts, released the following statement on oral arguments before the Supreme Court in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a direct challenge to women’s right to decide whether to continue their pregnancy prior to viability:

“Right-wing donors know there’s no chance of stripping women’s constitutional right to abortion through Congress or the executive branch.  That’s why they aimed their dark money at packing the Court with justices who wear their anti-abortion views on their sleeves – and even auditioned for their seats based on those views.

“Taking this case is exactly what big Republican donors expected from the 6-3 majority they engineered:  it aims a torpedo at the core of Roe, Casey, and nearly fifty years of precedent.  The justices’ decision to take this case demonstrates the Court That Dark Money Built’s intention to roll back women’s constitutional right to abortion.  People deserve the right to decide when to become a parent.”
