Deborah Gonzalez Sworn in as Central Falls Municipal Court Judge

CENTRAL FALLS, RI – In a ceremony held at City Hall today, Deborah S. Gonzalez was officially sworn in as the new judge of the Central Falls Municipal Court, filling a vacancy that had remained open since January. Gonzalez, a distinguished immigration attorney, professor, and community advocate, was appointed by Mayor Maria Rivera and confirmed by the City Council.
“Judge Gonzalez brings a wealth of legal knowledge, cultural understanding, and life experience to the bench that reflect the values of our city,” said Mayor Rivera. “In a community as diverse as Central Falls—where our residents speak many languages, come from many backgrounds, and carry many different stories—she brings a rare combination of legal expertise, compassion, and understanding that will make her an outstanding judge and a trusted figure in our Municipal Court.”
Gonzalez, born in Central Falls and the daughter of immigrants, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Immigration Clinic at Roger Williams University School of Law, where she has taught and mentored aspiring lawyers since 2012. For nearly two decades, through her private law practice, Gonzalez has represented clients in immigration, family, and criminal courts, often advocating for the most vulnerable—including children, immigrants, and those navigating language barriers.
Her experience includes pro bono work at immigration detention centers across the country, board and legal service with the ACLU of Rhode Island, and service on the boards of Rhode Island Kids Count and Dorcas International Institute of RI, and other local nonprofit organizations. A fluent Spanish, Portuguese and English speaker, Gonzalez has long been a trusted voice for Rhode Island’s immigrant communities.
Her appointment marks an important milestone in the city’s commitment to justice that is fair, accessible, and reflective of the community’s values.
“Thank you Mayor Rivera for the opportunity to serve on the Municipal Court,” said Judge Gonzalez. “I am honored and excited to serve the residents of the City of Central Falls––my hometown.”
